The return of the Great Fairies in Tears of the Kingdom means that Link can once again use their powers to help upgrade and improve his armor.
This incredibly useful feature is a bit hidden, but to realize its full potential, you’ll need to save a lot of materials and complete various side quests.
Here’s how to upgrade armor, what your armor upgrade does, and how many times you can upgrade your armor in TOTK.

How to upgrade armor
To upgrade your armor in Tears of the Kingdom, andFirst you need to unlock one of the Great Fairies.
That means you need to start with the Possible princess sightings! search, what starts at Lucky Clover Gazette outside of Rito Village. After that, you will also have to go to forest stable and complete Serenade a Great Fairy to unlock the Great Fairy Tera.
Once you have unlocked Tera, talk to her and she will allow you to upgrade your armor. All the armor in your menu that can be upgraded will be highlighted, along with the cost in Rupees and the materials you need to upgrade it.
All you need to do is select the piece you want to upgrade, and the Fairy will work her magic and upgrade your armor. Beautiful.
What does upgrade my armor do?
Upgrading your armor will not only increase the defense of your armor, but if you upgrade an entire “set” (ie the Zora armor set) twice, then you will get a bonus if you wear all three pieces of that armor.
The miner armor set, when upgraded to level three, grants you glowing footstepsthat leaves behind a trail of shining footsteps. Check out our guide to all armor for more details on complete sets.
What do I need to upgrade my armor?
As mentioned above, you will need rupees and materials to upgrade your armor.
armor upgrades starts at just 10 rupees, but the final upgrade will cost a whopping 500 rupees. Also, with each upgrade, you will need to have more materials, and often rarer materials. If you have difficulty bringing cash, please see our How to get rupees guide.

How many times can I upgrade my armor?
You can upgrade your armor four timesbut this depends on how many Great Fairy Fountains you have unlocked.
If you’ve unlocked Tera, for example, you can only upgrade your armor once. But if you unlock Mija below, you will be able to upgrade your armor twice. You can consult our Fairy Fountain Location Guide to find out where all the Fairies are.
That means, to fully upgrade your armor, you’ll need to unlock all of the Great Fairies. That means you need to complete the following side quests. You can do it in any order.but you must first have completed Serenade to a Great Fairy before any of the other ‘Serenade’ quests become available.
