England defeated Wales 3-0 in the Group B final on Tuesday and currently sits top of the group table going into the next stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions World Cup journey began against Iran, where they dominated 6-2, leading England to an intimidatingly outstanding start. Next, Harry Kane & Co. faced the United States, where they secured a 0-0 draw. And during their third match, England crushed Wales 3-0 after three thrilling second-half goals in a row.
So before we move on to the next stage, let’s take a look at some of the winners and losers of the Three Lions’ journey so far:
Winner: Marcus Rashford
There is no doubt that Marcus Rashford takes the cake for being the winningest winner on England’s World Cup trip so far. The 25-year-old striker already has three goals in the tournament and we’re not even in the round of 16 yet.
Rashford scored his first goal during England’s World Cup opener against Iran, which ended in a 6–2 victory for the Three Lions. The star then scored twice in England’s Group B final against Wales, resulting in a 3–0 win and a top spot in the group standings.
Loser: Manager Gareth Southgate
There isn’t much to note when it comes to underdogs in a team that just topped the Group B table. But if we had to name one thing, it would easily be the fact that England played the USA on Friday when they drew their teammates from Group B in a 0-0 draw.
The game, reportedly the USMNT’s toughest match of the entire tournament, was actually quite the feast as USA goaltender Matt Turner refrained from letting the balls get too close to his side of the court.
Winner: Phil Foden
Phil Foden is undoubtedly the winner based on his performance on the field on Tuesday. During a Group B final with Wales, the 22-year-old superstar netted England’s second goal of the game, contributing to their 3-0 win.
Just two minutes after Rashford’s first goal to break a 0–0 tie, Foden received a fine cross assist from teammate Harry Kane to score England’s 51st-minute goal. He had come on as a substitute against Iran but was not appeared against the US
Winner: Jordan Pickford
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is also worthy of a winning position in this World Cup tournament so far, considering the star allowed zero goals to get past him over the last two games played.
In Tuesday’s head-to-head with Wales, Pickford kept the slate clean by disallowing any balls that crossed the goal line. Similarly, during England’s battle against the United States on Friday, the goalkeeper managed to secure only save.
The only time Pickford passed up any chances was during England’s first World Cup game against Iran. Although the Three Lions defeated Iran 6-2, Pickford missed two attempts to stop the ball, one of which was a penalty.
Winner: Harry Kane
Superstar Harry Kane is, of course, among the winners of England’s 2022 World Cup performance so far, but this time it’s not because of his goals.
The 29-year-old striker tied David Beckham’s World Cup record for assists after assisting Phil Foden’s goal during England’s clash with Wale on Tuesday.
Who will England face in the 2022 FIFA World Cup?
The Three Lions will face the Lions of Teranga, Senegal, in the next phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup following Senegal’s 2-1 win over Ecuador on Tuesday during the group stage final.
Senegal became the first African nation to advance to the knockout round in Qatar after this close finish that resulted from goals from Ismaïla Sarr and captain Kalidou Koulibaly. This is the first time he has reached the knockout stage in 20 years.
England will face Senegal in the round of 16 on Sunday, December 4 at 2pm ET. at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.
