The upcoming Weird Al Yankovic biopic we didn’t know we needed just dropped its official trailer, and so far, the movie is getting triple in the Camp we recorded the first still images. Surprisingly, the trailer also revealed some strange nuances: Madonna causing chaos, Daniel Radcliffe going shirtless too often, and the overall story of a misunderstood protagonist living his life despite his parents’ wishes.
“Your dad and I agreed that it would be better if you just stopped being who you are and doing the things you love,” Weird Al’s parents said at the beginning of the trailer, in a moment that reads deliberately weird. This line sets the trajectory of the film, a traditional arc about an offbeat musician who defies all odds to become famous.
Of course, the way the parents say this literally also sets the film’s irreverent tone: in true Weird Al style, it’s a parody of similar films about the band’s creation. This is underscored by the way Weird Al describes his big dream. “All my life, all I wanted was to invent new words for a song that already exists,” he declares with a straight face. And in case that’s not satire enough, the film version of Weird Al is absurdly broken and constantly shows it off.
The trailer continues to cover Weird Al’s rise to stardom: his discovery at an open mic night by an eccentric promoter named Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), the initial media accolades from the likes of Oprah Winfrey (Quinta Brunson), his love affairs between celebrities. , and finally a descent into drugs and alcohol. But of everything in the trailer, his encounter with pop icon Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) has drawn the most attention.
We see Madonna approach Weird Al to do a parody of her song “Like A Virgin,” and in the next second, the pair kiss passionately. The Madonna/Weird Al binomial is a great gag that already has the internet divided between confusion and thirst, with the rest laughing at all those who don’t get the joke.
Admit it, if you haven’t Googled “Weird Al Madonna” yet, you plan on doing it at lunch.
