Here’s a rundown of Anchorage-area Memorial Day services and events:

Sunday

Honoring Our Heroes Headstone Cleaning9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave.

The Jack Henry Post 1 American Legion and Nuvision Alaska are organizing a volunteer cleanup to help maintain grave sites, place American flags and crosses, and make sure veterans’ headstones are visible before Memorial Day. Volunteers will also place a penny on each headstone, marking their visit to honor each individual’s service and family. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to bring friends and cleaning tools such as gloves, box knives or pruning shears, trowels, clean spray bottles, and natural or nylon scrub brushes. Meet at Legion, 840 W. Fireweed Lane, to carpool at 9 am, or join others at the cemetery’s Veterans Tract at 9:30 am The cleanup will be followed by a reception at Legion.

Monday

Anchorage remembers Memorial Day serviceMonday 9:30-10:30 a.m., Delaney Park Strip at Ninth Avenue and I Street

Hosted by the City of Anchorage, the event honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The program includes speakers, wreath-laying for fallen service members, patriotic music and ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial on the Delaney Park Strip. The event is free and open to the public.

A ceremony on the Park Strip will also honor Pvt. George Fox, an Unangan killed in World War II who recently received military honors, and whose name was just added to the Alaskans Fallen in World War II memorial wall.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Fort Richardson National CemeteryMonday at noon, 58-512 Davis Highway at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

Pre-ceremony music begins at 11:30 am and the ceremony begins at noon. Pre-registration for Memorial Day access has ended, but those seeking access to the base for the ceremony can visit the Richardson Visitor Control Center between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to receive a same-day pass. . The passes allow access on Monday, to and from Fort Richardson National Cemetery, and only for the official Memorial Day ceremony.

Mat-Su Veterans Wall of Honor Memorial Day CeremonyMonday at 1 p.m., 801 Wasilla-Fishhook Road in Wasilla

The 11th Airborne Division Band will perform beginning at 12:30 p.m. before the Mat-Su Veterans Wall of Honor ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m. from the Veterans Wall of Honor to Wasilla Cemetery, where a memorial service begins at 11 a.m.

Veterans Appreciation BBQ11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, American Legion Jack Henry Post 1, 840 W. Fireweed Lane in Anchorage

Nuvision Credit Union Alaska, American Legion Jack Henry Post 1, Elevated Oats and Nothin’ But Trouble are joining forces to serve local veterans and active duty military for a free lunch. It’s an opportunity to come together to celebrate your service, honor the fallen, and enjoy great company. Membership is not required and one additional guest is allowed per attendee. Bring your military ID.
