The character of Charlie is born from a very personal situation, confesses the writer Samuel D. Hunter. The story takes place in the town where he grew up, in northern Idaho. The book reflects real aspects of the author, such as growing up in a religious school or the rejection he suffered for being homosexual.

For his part, director Darren Aronofsky talks about how he was moved by the play he adapted. He fell in love with the characters and wanted to make a movie out of the novel. To do this, he asked the writer to write the script for the film adaptation of the work, so he did not believe that it was necessary to add new locations or characters to improve the story, so he limited himself to setting it in the character’s apartment. by Brendan Fraser.

The filmmaker comments that if it took him ten years to make the film it was because of the cast, until he found those performers who convinced him. When he happened to see a Brendan Fraser film, he discovered that the material really suited him like a glove. While the actor did not hesitate for a second, because the role had everything he wanted, out of the ordinary, where he describes him as a person capable of seeing the best in people, but not in himself. For his part, the lead actor confesses that Charlie is the most emotionally demanding character he has ever met.

The limited space when filming entirely in Charlie’s apartment meant that the director concentrated on acting, lighting, cameras and giving the apartment his personal touch. They continue talking about Ellie, a character played by actress Sadie Sink, where she and the director debate whether or not she is a bad person, due to the behavior and actions he takes of her because of her father’s abandonment.
