The devil in me | How to keep everyone alive

The Devil in Me is the fourth installment in Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures Anthology series, and as with the previous games, you’ll probably want to focus on trying to keep everyone alive until the end of the story. This will give you the Happy ending trophy/achievement. But given all the decisions and story beats that unfold, that can be quite a challenge. So we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to get out of The Devil in Me with all the characters alive and well.

SPOILER WARNING!

Please don’t read on unless you’ve finished The Devil in Me at least once or don’t mind if the plot or key events are spoiled. In order to provide the information required to keep everyone alive, we’ll need to go into certain story-spoiling details. You have been warned.

Note: This is just a set of solutions to keep everyone alive. There are other combinations that work that will also keep them alive.

The devil in me | Keep everyone alive with QTE

If you’ve played a Dark Pictures game before, you’ll know that Quick Time Events (or QTEs) play a key role in keeping people alive. There are four standards you should know about, as well as a few new ones to be aware of. The standards are:

  • Standard button press – press the required face button input on the controller within the time limit
  • button mash – repeatedly press the same button over and over again within the time limit
  • directed strike – You will need to aim with the right stick of the controller and then press with the right trigger button
  • Heartbeat – Press the button of the correct face in time with the heartbeat.

Note: There are many moments in the game where Heartbeat QTE is used. So it’s worth familiarizing yourself with it, so you don’t fall apart later in the game.

The new QTEs are:

  • Disguise – For these, you’ll need to quickly move to a designated spot (most likely you’ll run there, which is LB on a controller) and then press the designated hidden button (LT on a controller). He then holds it down until the threat has passed. While you hide you cannot be discovered.
  • Balance – Some situations require you to cross a narrow bridge, and your characters will need help to balance. You need to balance your balance, using the right stick on a controller, to help them cross. If you don’t, you’ll see them fall, and in some situations, to their deaths.

All of these are introduced separately in the Prologue and early game missions and can be practiced there with minimal impact on the story. If you complete every QTE in the game, the chance of someone dying in your party is drastically reduced. So it is worth knowing and practicing them. Alternatively, if you find them too difficult, you can lower the difficulty level at the start of the games or toggle some QTE options in the Accessibility options in the Settings menu to make things easier.

Key decisions to keep everyone alive

Take the inhaler and use it.

The devil in me keeps everyone alive

Your first step in keeping everyone alive in The Devil in Me takes place in the Blackout chapter. After Erin has to explore the hotel in the dark with her microphone, she ends up locked in a room alone. After panicking, she comes face to face with a figure offering her an inhaler. She chooses to take the inhaler instead of attacking. Attacking the figure will not end well for Erin.

Once Erin has the inhaler as an inventory item, be sure to take it at times when she feels out of breath or finds it difficult to breathe. This will keep her alive.

In the Silver Ash Institute, hide in the closet.

After Erin has finished exploring the Silver Ash Institute, Erin will hear Jamie’s voice from a mannequin. She will tell you that she is in danger and needs to hide in a closet. You have to listen to her and hide in the closet. If you choose the Execute option instead of her, Erin will die.

In the Incinerator, choose the grill.

Once Charlie is trapped in the incinerator, he will have two options: force the door open or lift the grate. You have to choose the grid. Initially, you will have problems and then you will have a second option. Pick the grate a second time and eventually you will free it and go inside. It seems finished, but this option actually saves your life.

Choose to kill Kate

The devil in me keeps everyone alive

When you have to choose between Kate and Erin when they are trapped in the room that is losing oxygen, choose to kill Kate and thus save Erin. As Kate struggles to breathe, she notices that the window is leaking air, and Mark breaks the glass and saves Kate as well. If you choose to kill Erin, she will die.

Take note of who has the screwdriver.

When you’re in the director’s suite and come up with a plan to capture Du’Met, Kate can choose to keep the screwdriver or give it to Jamie. It doesn’t matter who you give it to, since there is a solution, whatever you decide. But if you want to improve the relationship between Kate and Jamie, give Jamie the screwdriver.

Make sure whoever has the screwdriver gets crushed

After the plan to trap Du’Met fails, Kate and Jamie find themselves in a room with a moving glass wall. She will start moving to Jamie. Assuming you gave Jamie the screwdriver, when given the conversation option, she chooses “Challenging” and Jamie will announce that she isn’t playing and won’t press the button.

Then you get the Aimed Hit QTE event for button press. Aim away from the button, or just wait for the time to run out. Jamie will not press the button and the wall will keep moving to crush her. However, that screwdriver Kate gave him will save her life.

Alternatively, if Kate has the screwdriver, make sure Jamie pushes the button and the opposite will happen and the screwdriver will save Kate’s life.

On the roof, save Jamie

After Kate has performed many QTEs to escape Du’Met’s clutches, she finds that she somehow manages to trap Jamie on the roof. Kate can choose to run away or help Jamie. You have to help her or Jamie dies at the hands of Du’Met.

Run when you’re in the barn

When you enter the barn with Erin, Jamie, and Kate (the one with the ax outside), you’ll have a couple of decisions to make. You can choose to barricade the door, but it won’t last long. Erin will call you to run and you will have the choice to run or climb. You have to run with Erin or she will end up dying alone. So make sure you pick Run and all three of you will make it out alive.

In the lighthouse, on Charlie’s side

As Erin explores the Silver Ash Institute, she discovers a cassette player behind some movable blinds. Playing it will reveal a recorded message implying that Charlie is complicit in the group’s murder.

Later in the story at the Lighthouse, when Erin confronts Charlie about it, as Mark, make sure to take Charlie’s side and give him the benefit of the doubt, otherwise bad things will happen.

Survive the boat fight

The climax of the story, and your quest to keep everyone alive in The Devil in Me, is a fight on the ship. The easiest way to save everyone here is to be ready for QTEs and succeed in all of them. Erin and Charlie need to survive by pressing a QTE button and they will automatically survive.

Jamie can choose to just jump off the boat and she too will survive. She can also choose to stop and fight, but that doesn’t change anything. Kate can also choose to attack Du’Met or just jump. Jumping still means Mark can survive, but it hurts your relationship if those things bother you.

Mark will then need to succeed in the QTEs to injure and suppress Du’Met before finally killing him. Then finally for Mark to escape you need to hit a final QTE button to jump off the boat before it hits the rocks and explodes.

He has now completed The Devil in Me and managed to keep everyone alive, and in doing so he bagged the Happy ending trophy/achievement.
