SWLA June 16 Celebration Events Calendar

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is the oldest known holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war was over and the slaves were now free.

Juneteenth today celebrates the freedom and achievements of African Americans while encouraging continued self-development and respect for all cultures.

The mission of the Southwest Louisiana Juneteenth Committee (SWLA) is to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States by celebrating the joys of freedom, educating the community about African-American heritage, and promoting positive cultural interaction.

Each year, the SWLA Juneteenth Committee organizes various events in honor of the Juneteenth holiday (June 19), including the SWLA Juneteenth Music Festival.
