A story every Indian sports fan would have heard is dramatized in the long-delayed first teaser for Maidaan starring Ajay Devgan like coach Syed Abdul Rahim, considered the architect of modern Indian football. The film, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, finally got a sneak peek on Thursday, coinciding with the release of Ajay’s latest film, the action drama Bholaa.

The minute and a half trailer doesn’t give away too many plot details, but it is set during the Golden Age of Indian soccer and begins at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. , what is most memorable, barefoot. The official synopsis describes Maidaan as “the true story of an unsung hero who created history and records for India in such a way that, even 60 years later, we cannot match those achievements in the world’s most played sport, football.”

We see shots of the big stadiums, of Ajay’s character waiting in the tunnel, of riots and celebrations, and also a dramatic moment where he is on the ground with tears in his eyes. The video ends with a preview of Ajay’s usual inspirational monologue, in which he says: “Aaj Maidaan mein utarna gyarah, lekin dikhna 1.”
The movie appears to be similar to the iconic Shah Rukh Khan starring Chak De! India, in which SRK played the fictional coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. A few years ago, Akshay Kumar starred in Gold, which was about the Indian hockey team’s first gold medal at the Olympic Games, in 1948.
Maidan it also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao and Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh. The film is by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta and Akash Chawla, and the script and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah respectively. AR Rahman has composed the music. Maidaan has been delayed due to the pandemic, but is set to be released in theaters around the world on June 23, 2023.
