Two of the most renowned cricketers to have led England in the past were Hussain and Atherton. They completed outstanding feats that are still talked about today during their total tenure of 211 Tests. Both players displayed exceptional leadership qualities and took the initiative to motivate their teammates to give it their all on the pitch.

Thorpe’s contributions to the team, who served as assistant coach, were no less fundamental. His knowledge of the game and his ability to spot the opponent’s flaws improved the team’s strategy.

“We behave off the field as a team”- Steve Harmison

Former England New-ball bowler Steve Harmison addressed Jason Gillespie’s comments about England playing urgently in the 2005 Ashes series. He did so on SEN’s road to the Ashes. The former Durham cricketer believes that during the series, the culture and the guard changed.

“The difference between that and 2003, 2001 and 1999, 1997, was that in 2005 we were a team. We had grown as a team, played as a team, and off the pitch as a team. In 1997, 2001, 2003/04, there were a lot of selfish characters playing for England.” Steve Harmison said.

“Some great cricketers, don’t get me wrong… but when you look, and I have no problem saying this, players like Nasser, Athers, Thorpey (Graham Thorpe), Corkey (Dominic Cork), Darren Gough, Andy Caddock, there was a group of people playing together as a team where you look at 2005, we were a team.” added Steve Harmison.
