REMARKS FROM DAVE BIRKETT:The pass rush looks formidable in a sloppy preseason finale
The Steelers have a new look, even if they have the same coach, with former Lions assassin Mitchell Trubisky at center following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement. Trubisky, who at one point had a four-game winning streak against the Lions, was expected to be the starter, but 2022 first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett has reportedly looked good in camp. of the Steelers to this point. But it will be Trubisky who starts against the Lions.
The Lions are expected to play their starters except for quarterback Jared Goff. The starters largely sat out the third preseason game last season, but coach Dan Campbell will likely turn the tide on Sunday, at least for a few series. Roster cuts loom Tuesday afternoon, and the second half of the game will be a key factor in determining who completes the Lions’ roster. Recent recruits Quintez Cephus and James Mitchell may need to prove themselves and David Blough and Tim Boyle will push to show that each should be the backup behind Goff. The loser of the QB2 race may be off the list entirely.
The Lions open the regular season on September 11 at home against the Philadelphia Eagles; the Steelers visit the Cincinnati Bengals.
