(23) NICK KYRGIOS vs. (27) KAREN KHACHANOV
Kyrgios was apparently reborn earlier this year. Despite struggling for the past half decade, the Aussie made an incredible run to the championship match at Wimbledon, before losing to Novak Djokovic. However, he hasn’t slumped in his return to New York, reaching his first quarterfinal appearance, including defeating defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16.
This is Khachanov’s best performance at a hard court major in his career. Before the US Open, he had never made it to the second week. Yet he has done it, entering the third Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance of his career, the first since Wimbledon last year.
This will be only the second time these two have met in individual action and they will both be facing each other. Kyrgios emerged victorious in his only major meeting, beating Khachanov in the third round of the Australian Open 2020.
(5) CASPER RUUD vs. (13) MATTEO BERRETTINI
The hard-hitting young Italian has apparently not missed a beat after missing the French Open and Wimbledon tournaments. Berrettini may have had some trouble against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round, but he was able to reach the quarterfinals in Queens for the third time in his career.
After a hugely disappointing second-round exit in London in July, Ruud has bounced back and is having his best run at the US Open. The runner-up at this year’s French Open reached the second week at a hard-court Grand Slam for the second time in his career, and is eyeing a second major semi-final in 2022.
Ruud has an all-time record of 3-2 over Berrettini, including a three-set victory in July at the Swiss Open. They have each won against each other in Grand Slam action, with Berrettini winning in the third round of the 2020 US Open.

(9) ANDREY RUBLEV vs. (22) FRANCES TIAFOE
Rublev has been unpredictable throughout his career, ever since he qualified for the US Open in 2015. After a pair of five-set scares, including a lengthy third-round encounter with Denis Shapovalov, the Russian made it easy for Rublev. Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16, advancing to the last eight in Queens for the third time in his career. Rublev will attempt to reach the semi-finals in a major tournament for the first time in his career, coming close in a five-set thriller against Marin Cilic at the French Open earlier this year.
Veteran Frances Tiafoe finds herself in some pretty uncharted territory. Entering the tournament, the American had only one quarter-final appearance at a Grand Slam, at the 2019 Australian Open. However, after reaching the second week at the US Open for the third year in a row, Tiafoe notched a impressive four-set win over 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal on Monday. So far, that has been the only match in which Tiafoe has dropped a set.
These two met in the third round of last year’s tournament, where Tiafoe outclassed Rublev in five sets. Rublev responded with a win in his second meeting at the Indian Wells Masters in March, winning in straight sets.
