The Paragon board serves as a custom passive tree, providing useful stat buffs and powerful bonuses for builds that can master this system. This guide will show everything you need to know about Diablo 4’s Paragon Board, explaining how it works, how to unlock it, how Glyphs and Gates work, and giving some tips on how to maximize this progression system.

What is the Paragon board?

Diablo 4 Paragon board starting section

The Paragon Board serves as Diablo 4’s post-campaign progression system. Similar to Diablo 3’s Paragon system, The purpose of a Paragon Board is to increase the overall power of your build in small increments over time. As you gain XP beyond level 50, you will earn Paragon Points which can be spent to assign passive bonuses on your Paragon Board. These range from stat boosts to build enable passives that rival legendary affixes.

Unlike Diablo 3, the Paragon system in Diablo 4 does not progress indefinitely. Builds can assign up to 220 Paragon Board passives, obtained by reaching level 100 and maximum renown in all regions. Paragon boards are tied to specific characters, with each class getting unique boards to specify. These boards can be further augmented with Glyphs, plug-in items that add or alter the passives provided by your board. At its core, the Paragon Board is a player-created passive tree. which can be further increased through Glyphs.

Paragon System Unlock

The Paragon board is unlocked upon reaching level 50. You can access your Paragon Dashboard at any time by opening your skill tree and selecting the “Paragon” tab. Like Skill Points, Paragon Points are earned by leveling up your character and increasing your Renown with each region of Sanctuary. Every quarter level you gain grants one Paragon Point. The final Renown reward for each zone also grants four Paragon Points, totaling 20 points when all regions are completed. A maximum of 220 Paragon Points can be allocated on your Paragon Board.

Every point you earn can be assigned to your current Paragon Board. All classes start with a fairly similar board. You will immediately notice the different rarities of each node:

  • Common: Provides +5 to a stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Willpower).
  • Magic: Provides a damage, defense, or utility bonus.
  • Strange: Provides two damage, defense, utility, or stat bonuses.

As you progress, you’ll come across magical and rare nodes that provide stronger and more noticeable bonuses than the default stat nodes. Reaching the end of your current board will unlock a Door node, allowing you to attach another board to your current passive tree. The center of your starter board also comes with a glyph socket, allowing you to add passive heal effects or modify the stats provided by nearby stat nodes.

Using and updating glyphs

The center of your first Paragon board will contain an empty glyph slot. Glyphs are plug-in passives that add or modify the stats of nearby Paragon nodes. Each Glyph you install will create an aura around it, influencing everything within a three-node radius. Nodes assigned within this radius will either get a side effect or become stronger. For example, a glyph that enhances intelligence will cause all nearby intelligence nodes to provide a more powerful secondary effect in addition to granting intelligence.

Glyphs can be generalized into three categories:

  1. Attribute Glyphs: Nodes that increase your basic attributes also grant a secondary bonus.
  2. Rarity Glyphs: Magical or rare nodes within the radius of the glyph are stronger.
  3. Statistical Magnitude Glyphs: Nodes within range gain a bonus to X and Y modifiers.

Besides, all Glyphs come with a secondary bonus that is locked behind an attribute requirementsuch as allocating 40 Dexterity within the Glyph radius or achieving a total Intelligence value of 400. These secondary bonuses tend to be quite powerful and are worth unlocking for most builds.

gain new glyphs

Most players will have a handful of Glyphs by default, but those aren’t the only Glyphs available in Diablo 4. Slain monsters have a rare chance to drop unowned glyphs. Activities with a high density of enemies, particularly Nightmare Dungeons and Helltide, are the best places to farm for new glyphs.

glyph update

Every Glyph you’ll get will start with a base level that can be increased, improving the magnitudes of the Glyph’s stats and even its effective radius on your Paragon Board. Glyphs can be upgraded at the end of each Nightmare Dungeon. Successfully completing a Nightmare Dungeon will spawn a unique altar that will be used to upgrade glyphs. Each Nightmare Dungeon you complete will grant you Glyph XP which is used to level your glyphs. The more difficult the dungeon, the more Glyph XP you will earn.

Each Glyph upgrade will slightly buff the listed effects, and every 15 levels will increase the effective radius of the Glyph by one node. Leveling up a glyph becomes increasingly expensive, so be sure to upgrade glyphs that benefit your build. You can’t respect Glyph XP.

attach boards

At the end of each Paragon Board is a Door, a single node that connects various pieces of the board. Assigning a gate node will allow you to install one of eight new boards on your current Paragon board. You will be able to preview the dashboard content, including node modifiers and routes, prior to installation. Once a board is installed, you will be able to assign nodes within that board and unlock additional doors.

While previewing a new Paragon board, you can rotate the new board to change your starting gate. This is particularly useful if you plan to assign a specific magical, rare, or legendary node on the new board.

Each class has access to eight unique boards. Each attached board comes with a Glyph socket and a unique legendary node, providing a powerful effect that is comparable to a legendary affix. Boards tend to be related to specific abilities or build archetypes, so consider choosing boards that have synergy with your current abilities and passives. You cannot equip the same board twice.

Paragon Board Tips

  • Focus on one attribute. Scaling a single attribute makes it easier to trigger Glyph’s secondary bonuses.
  • Rotate your board. Some boards have legendary nodes in corners or hard-to-reach places. Rotating your board can minimize the Paragon investment required to purchase these nodes.
  • Reaching maximum renown with a Sanctuary region grants four Paragon Points. You can earn up to 20 Paragon Points this way.
  • Upgrade your glyphs to level 15 as soon as possible. This increases the effective radius of the Glyph on your Paragon Board.
  • You can respect Paragon nodes for a small Gold fee. If a Paragon Board has no nodes assigned to it, you can remove it and attach a new type of board.
