Splatoon 3 Squid Roll: The Basics
Before looking at Squid Rolls, let’s first take a look at why they are so important. In Splatoon 3, you can transform into a squid and dive into any inkblot that matches your team color. You can see a submerged Inkling in the image above. This allows you to travel around the map much faster than if you were to stay on foot.
Squid Rolling is a special way of jumping out of ink, allowing you to quickly change direction and giving your character some precious frames of invulnerability. Under the right circumstances, a well-timed squid roll is the difference between life and death.
Squid Rolling has several steps:
- Dive into an inkblot (but make sure there is enough ink in the color of your machine so you can get up to speed.)
- Swim quickly with’ZL‘ to increase speed.
- Once you have enough speed, move the joystick in the direction you want to roll while pressing the button jump button. It is important to make both entries simultaneously.
If you were successful on the roll, your character will move across the battlefield like a smear of ink. If you’re confused about what this looks like, take a look at the screenshot above.
After a few short moments, your character will snap out of their Squid Roll and resume normal movement. Remember, you can always dive back in if you need to get out of the line of fire.
