EA Games offers a compelling library of AAA titles that are played by millions of users, but some users are reporting problems trying to install Origin on their system. Every time they try to run the installation, the setup greets them with an error code 20:2.
If you also encounter this problem, don’t worry. We will list the reasons why the installation fails and how to solve the problem.
Why does Origin throw error code 20:2 on install?
The Origin installer may encounter error code 20:2 for the following reasons:
- Origin does not have elevated permissions to install.
- The app is facing network issues such as disconnection, firewall block or proxy usage.
- An antivirus program is interfering with the installation.
- There is not enough space to install Origin.
These are just some of the common culprits behind this error, so let’s explore how to fix it for good.
How to Fix Origin Install Failed with Error Code 20:2 Issue
Now, you know the possible reasons for the error code. Here are some methods you can use to fix the Origin installation problem.
1. Check your Internet connection
The Origin installer uses your Internet connection to download its setup files for installation. If your computer does not have a working Internet connection, the installer will not be able to download the necessary files. It will fail with error 20:2 and will not install unless you reconnect to the Internet.
Therefore, check your Internet connection by opening a web-based application or website in a browser. Then run the Origin installer again and check if the error code persists.
2. Run the Origin installer with administrator privileges
Some apps require elevated permissions to work. If you are not using an administrator account in Windows, switch to one with administrator rights. Or, right-click on the Origin installer file and select the “run as administrator” option. Then try the installation again and see if it is successful this time.
3. Make sure you have enough disk space for Origin
If you have inadequate space on the installation disk for Origin, it will fail to install and will give you an error. Therefore, you need to make sure there is enough disk space to install Origin.
Your storage drive can get bloated due to temporary files, update files, and more. Fortunately, you can use the Settings app to free up some space on your system drive.
Here’s how to clean temporary files using the Settings app:
- Press win + me to launch the Settings app.
- Move to down System settings section and click the Storage adjustment.
- Click on the Temporary files option. scroll down and Select the check boxes for the type of files you want to delete. you can skip the downloads because you may have important files.
- Then go to the top of the page and click on the remove files button.
If that doesn’t seem like freeing up much space, check out how to reclaim missing storage space in Windows to squeeze more megabytes out of your system.
4. Disable Windows Defender and other antivirus programs
Antivirus programs can interfere with the installation of the Origin app when you try to download its installation files. If you use a third-party antivirus like Avast, disable it until the next reboot. You need to go to the system tray icon and disable it. Windows Defender users need to go the extra mile to disable it.
Windows 10 and 11 now offer tamper protection. It re-enables real-time protection on your system even if you disable it. Therefore, you need to disable tamper protection and then disable real-time protection on your Windows PC.
To disable Windows Defender on your system, do the following:
- Press win + me to throw the Settings application Now, navigate to the left side menu and click on the Privacy & Security option.
- Then navigate to Windows Security > Open Windows Security.
- The Windows Security app will start. Click on the Protection against viruses and threats option on the home page.
- Scroll down and click on the Manage settings options present under the Virus and threat protection settings section.
- Now locate the Real-time protection option and click on the switch to disable it.
- Then scroll down and find the Tamper Protection option. Click on the switch to disable it as well.
- Now, exit the Windows Security app. Relaunch the Origin app installer and see if it runs without errors.
5. Clear Origin Cache
If you installed Origin before and then uninstalled it, there may still be residual files left. These files can get corrupted over time, and when you try to run the installer, these corrupted files interfere with the installation process.
As such, deleting the Origin app data folder may resolve the error. Don’t worry about breaking the app; when you run the installer it will recreate these files with fresh new files.
Here’s how to clear the Origin app data folder:
- Press win + me to launch the Run command box. Get into %Application Data% and press the enter key.
- The file explorer will take you to the application data binder.
- Scroll down and locate the folder called Source. Select it and press Shift + Delete.
- Reboot your system. Once it’s back, try to install Origin and check if the problem persists.
6. Use safe mode with networking
If another program is interfering with the installation, running the Origin installer in safe mode may resolve the issue. Since the installer requires the Internet to download additional files, you must start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking.
Here’s how to boot into safe mode with networking in Windows:
- press the Victory key and click the Energy button. Hold down the button Change key and click Restart.
- Windows will reboot and enter troubleshooting mode for the Windows operating system.
- Click on the Solve problems option and then click the Advanced Options icon on the next page.
- Locate the Start Settings option in advanced settings and click on it. Then click on the Restart button to access multiple boot modes.
- You will see nine options listed on the page. To start Windows in Safe mode with networking activated, press the button F5 wrench.
- Windows will restart and then boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
- Now go to the location of the Origin installer file and run it with elevated permissions. Check if the error code still appears.
7. Try Origin’s non-thin client
The installer available on the Origin site requires an Internet connection to download more files. But a non-light client version of the Origin installer is also available. It’s larger in file size, but you don’t need to download additional files as a result. Some Origin users say that when installing the non-thin Origin client, they did not encounter the error code.
You can download the non-thin Origin client by visiting the Origin download page. Next, run the Origin installer with administrator privileges.
8. Disable any VPN or proxy servers
EA servers can be tough on VPN connections and proxy servers. If you are running any of these while running the installer, disabling them may resolve the issue. You can turn off the VPN by ending the connection using the app or by closing the app until the installation is complete.
To disable a proxy server on your system, do the following:
- Press win + me to launch the Settings app. Navigate to the menu on the left side and select the Network and Internet option.
- Scroll down and click on the Attorney option. Then click on the Edit button located next to the Use a proxy server option.
- Click the switch to disable the proxy server. Click on the Save money and exit the Settings app.
- Relaunch the Origin installer.
