With regular updates to Samsung’s One UI Watch, there’s often a good chance one is waiting to be installed. In case that is the case, this guide will show you how to check for software updates on your Galaxy Watch 4 or 5.
Why only Watch 4 and 5?
When the Galaxy Watch 4 launched, the device came with a hybrid version of Tizen and Wear OS 3. While it sounds complicated, this new mix of platforms brought a genuinely good experience to the Galaxy Watch 4 series.
As for the Galaxy Watch 5, it runs the same software, albeit a newer version. Since both watches run a version of One UI Watch, the process for handling software updates is nearly identical.
Find and start a software update on Watch 4 and Watch 5
There are two ways to update your Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 5. The first would be to use the watch itself, though you’d have to navigate the menus on the Wear OS device. The second way is the one we recommend, which is through your paired Android device and the Samsung Wearable app.
Here’s how to update your Galaxy Watch 4 or 5:
From your Android phone
- On your paired Android device, go to the samsung wearable app
- Choose the paired watch you want to update.
- Paste clock settings.
- Scroll down and tap See software update.
- Play Download and install.

From there, your phone will start downloading the new update which you can then push to your watch.
From your Galaxy watch
- slide down of the main watch face.
- tap on the configuration gear.
- Scroll down and tap Software update.
- Play Download and install.

The process doesn’t take long, though there is an optimization phase that can take a while depending on how many apps are loaded on your Watch 4 or Watch 5. While the update is downloading, you can still use your watch. However, once the installation phase begins, you’ll need to let the Galaxy Watch do its thing.
How often does the Galaxy Watch receive updates?
Like its phones, Samsung has been committed to updating Galaxy watches for so many years. Watches like the Watch 3 and Active 2 are still getting updates, at least for now.
As for the Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung has promised four years of updates for the device, starting with the initial launch in 2021, meaning users can expect to continue seeing software updates until the end of 2025.
If you own a Galaxy Watch 5, you can expect the same 4-year plan to apply to your device, with upgrades through 2026. This is a great benefit for those who want to get the most out of their device. . We’ve already seen that Samsung is willing to push quality of life updates to older devices, which means your Watch 4 or Watch 5 should see these updates for a while.
