PSD PRESS RELEASE: Thirteen New Sheriffs Graduate From Law Enforcement Academy.

HONOLULU – Officials, family and friends from the Department of Public Safety (PSD) and the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE) gathered today at the State Capitol Auditorium in Honolulu to witness the graduation of the Law Enforcement Recruit Class of Deputy Sheriffs Act (LERC) 22-02 Thirteen new deputies were added to the Sheriff’s Division and will be assigned to positions throughout the state.

New deputies were presented with graduation certificates, followed by the recitation of the oath of office and the presentation of the sheriff’s badge. A family member was selected to place the plaque on the new deputy sheriff.

in the spirit of Law 278 (SLH 2022), PSD and DLE also hosted a Department of Taxation (DoTAX) criminal investigator, who assisted the entire class of law enforcement recruits. She received a certification of completion. DoTAX will also have two additional investigators included in the next class beginning in July.

“The recruits endured six months of intensive physical and academic training to reach today as newly sworn members of the Sheriff’s Division,” said State Sheriff Mark Hanohano. “On behalf of the Division, I extend my congratulations and wish you the best as you begin to carry out your duties to keep our community safe.”

Recruits were trained in more than 1,000 hours of academic instruction and practical tests in constitutional and criminal law, ethical use of force, physical fitness, traffic control, firearms, and physical control tactics.

Student awards for Top Gun, Physical Fitness, Leadership, Academic Average, and Distinguished Recruit were also given to recruits who ranked at the top of their class in those areas.

The new deputies will be sent to work in various positions throughout the state. Eight will be assigned to Oahu and 5 to hawaiiI island.
