Since 2009, Gamescom has been one of the biggest gaming events, giving gamers tons of announcements to get excited about every year. This was the first year they’ve returned in person since the pandemic, so they had to bring their A-game with tons of great announcements.
Easily one of the most anticipated games for Gamescom was Dead Island 2, which was announced almost 8 years ago and finally got a new trailer and a February 3, 2023 release date, almost 12 years after the original came out. . Gameplay is shown that looks awfully familiar for another zombie game, Dying Light. But apart from the gameplay, we still don’t know much about the game. If you can avoid the many pitfalls of the first game, it could be a lot of fun.
Another fan favorite to get a new trailer was Sonic Frontiers, a new open-zone style game. which got a new trailer and a new release date. The game feels like a fresh take on the classic formula and could be a big step in the right direction for the franchise. It comes out on November 8, 2022.
Announced in September 2020, but delayed due to Covid, it was Hogwarts Legacy.
A new game set in the Harry Potter universe featuring a new story set in the 19th century. The game will be an open world adventure, which promises to allow the player to explore an open world set of Hogwarts and its surroundings. You’ll also decide how you want to play with many different things to do with the game, saying you can “be any witch or wizard you want to be” by brewing potions, making friends, and making “tough decisions.” Although the game doesn’t have much to show for itself, it might be too good to be true.
One of the most unexpected announcements was Dune: Awakening. Based on the book series and the 2021 movie, it is a survival MMO set in the dune universe. We don’t know much about the game, but the concept sounds like a lot of fun to tackle with friends. It is expected to launch on Ps5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Another highly anticipated game that was shown this year was Gotham Knights. It gives us a new trailer showing off some of the villains that the likes of Robin and Nightwing will face. In the trailer, we saw villains like Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Harley Quinn. The game looks interesting and has the potential to live up to previous Batman games and maybe even better.
And the best announcement for Gamescom was a new 3v7 multiplayer horror game featuring a beloved 80s horror IP. Killer Klowns From Outer Space The Game was one of the most intriguing announcements. Created by the director of the game Friday the 13th, it is sure to be a hit. It is expected to be released in early 2023 for PC, Ps4, Ps5, Xbox Series X and Xbox 1.
and I can’t wait to hear more about the game in the coming months.
The event also had an awards show that awarded prizes to the next new titles revealed at the fair. Most Wanted Game awards went to Lies of P for Playstation, Tin Hearts for Nintendo Switch, The Last Case of Benedict Fox for Xbox, and Metal: Hellsinger for PC. The award for best ongoing game went to sea of thieves.
Gamescom also featured a new Nintendo Treehouse event that showcased 2 new games. One of which is the highly anticipated Splatoon 3 which received new gameplay for its single-player story mode. It doesn’t look too different from Splatoon 2 though and for me it will act as something to practice with while I take a break from multiplayer. The other game shown at Treehouse was Harvestella, which is a farming simulation RPG that seems painfully bland and uninteresting. It looks like a side activity in a Final Fantasy game.
Overall, Gamescom proves what I’ve been thinking: 2022 and 2023 are going to be great years for gaming and I can’t wait for all these great games to come out.
