After defeating No. 6 Oklahoma State, Florida State softball moved into the winning bracket game against No. 7 Washington, beating the Huskies 3-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series:

In the second game for both teams, it was freshman vs. freshman for each. For Florida State, Makenna Reid got the nod and Ruby Meylan for the Dawgs.

Leading off the bottom of the second inning, Devyn Flaherty led off with a double, followed by Mack Leonard reaching on error. An unproductive out put one on the board and Katie Dack’s single loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, one out, Josie Muffley singled through third baseman and shortstop to bring in the first run of the game.

A quiet inning from 3 to 5 by both pitchers came to an end in the 6, when Madison Huskey led off with a double. The hit was the first of 9 batters for Sandercock, as both she and Lopez kept opposing offenses quiet. With the runner on second, Kelley Lynch singled to left field to bring the runner home.

Still with one out, now only up 2-1, and a runner on base, a groundout moved the runner from first to second, and catching the sleeping FSU defense, he took third. An intentional walk to Rylee Holtorf had runners on first and third for a pinch hitter. Sandercock grounded out to drive out of the inning and keep the team’s lead from him.

After retiring 9 straight times, Lopez gave up a leadoff single to Flaherty in the bottom of the 6th. A stolen base by Flaherty put her in scoring position for Mack Leonard, who bunted for the first time all season. A missed throw allowed Leonard to reach and Flaherty to score.

In the top of the seventh, Sydney Stewart reached on an infield single off of Sandercock. A second hit by Klingler had two runners on with no outs. Josie Muffley closed out the game with a fly out and a huge liner double play by Josie Muffley.

Florida State defeated Oklahoma State by an 8-0 mark, taking home a win in their first Women’s College World Series meeting via run rule:

As a home team, FSU released ace Kathryn Sandercock, who laid out her first three Cowgirls. After Sandercock retired the team, Kalei Harding drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first inning. Against Kelly Maxwell for OSU, Michaela Edenfield hit her first home run in over a month, a shot to the moon to open the scoring.

Up 2-0, Sandercock left two Cowgirls on base in the second inning, while Maxwell left Katie Dack on base for her team.

After the first out at the 3rd, a lightning delay of just over an hour was issued, and FSU and OSU resumed play at 10:55 EST. Sandercock allowed a two-out walk and a single, but Jahni Kerr’s connection to Devyn Flaherty caught Kiley Naomi extending her single to extra bases for the final out of the inning.

Deciding not to go back to Maxwell after the delay, the Cowgirls went to the bullpen for Kyra Aycock. Kaley Mudge started the inning with a bunt, but it was erased after he left base early on the attempted steal. FSU got Kerr and Harding on base via a walk and double, and Kerr scored on a fielder’s choice.

Two cowgirls were left in the top of the 4th, as FSU turned to the bottom of the inning. Early on, Mack Leonard singled up the middle and was replaced by Autumn Belviy. With speed on the bases, Hallie Wacaser was walked and a groundout put both runners in scoring position.

Josie Muffley hit a perfectly placed precision bunt, which not only allowed Belviy to score safely, but allowed Muffley to reach first. Runners at the corners and one out, Mudge answered the small ball, with power, as she blasted a three-run homer off Kyra Aycock.

With the floodgates now open with a 7-0 score, and all the momentum with the ‘Noles, Sandercock held a scoreless frame into the fifth. On the Cowgirls side, Aycock extended his game as no runs were crossed for the eighth run of the game and the run rule.
