Empire reveals our first look at the story and characters of ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’

We have finally begun to peel back the layers of the mysterious glass onion.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s smash hit, whodunnit, knives out ever since Netflix announced it would finance two sequels written and directed by Johnson, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as elusive detective Benoit Blanc.

The latest from Empire magazine cover story will give us a deeper dive into what we can expect, but they’ve already released some key character details in anticipation of its October 2022 issue.

Starring an all-new assassin character row, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has Benoit Blanc on an island getaway when he’s invited to a murder mystery party hosted by tech giant Miles Bron (Edward Norton). After the party lives up to its premise, Blanc becomes involved in the case and tensions naturally arise.

Among the list of suspects is Bron himself, whom Johnson calls an “instantly recognizable” archetype “in our age of tech billionaires.” netflix synopsis he confirms that the party is being hosted on his private island, so naturally he’s the first to cut off.

One of the first exclusive images from Empire shows him confronting Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), a YouTube star accompanied by his visibly younger girlfriend and channel assistant Whiskey (Madelyn Cline). Johnson leaves no stone unturned, it seems.

The list of archetypal consignments continues with Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), a Connecticut governor running for a Senate seat who “pisses everyone off,” according to Johnson. “[She] she’s trying to thread the needle in a lot of different ways, in terms of her public persona and what she’s willing to compromise to stay in office.” Fresh off of Agatha Harkness’s fans favorite interpretation of her in Wanda VisionHahn is sure to be a scene stealer.

Rounding out this group of beatable faces are businesswoman Cassandra “Andi” Brand (Janelle Monae), fashion icon Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) along with her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick), and scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.). As an employee of Bron’s company, could I have a sworn loyalty?

Just like the previous movie, glass onion It will be mixed with social commentary, this time tackling the hot topic of the wealth gap. “The movie itself isn’t entirely about the revenue split, but that definitely has a big place in it,” Johnson explains. “We are at a time in history where the division feels more and more raunchy. Like a circus that we can’t take our eyes off, even as the negative effects become more and more real in all of our lives.” Given this cast of beatable personalities and the multi-faceted thematic takedowns in knives outJohnson will surely go for the throat in more ways than one.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 10 as part of its Special Presentations section, followed by a limited theatrical release on a date yet to be announced.

The film will be available on Netflix globally starting December 23, just in time for the holiday season.
