MOBILE, Ala. (WALA)-Like the photographs he takes, Byron Wilmoth knows that Mother Nature is full of surprises.
“My experience has been with the weather, that when something unexpected happens like a delay, we see that we think we’re safe, that usually something is coming,” Wilmoth said.
Our unusually quiet storm season has the Gulf Coast keeping a close eye on a new disturbance.
“Although we are a little worried about this one. If you’ve lived it like with Frederick and some of the others… If he comes through that Gulf, you have to see it. I’m not going to turn my back on him. Once again, I’m going to get ready this weekend and maybe by Sunday we’ll know a little bit more about where it’s headed,” said Jimmy Smith, Mobile.
And one way to get ahead of things: our FOX 10 Storm Tracker Preparedness Guide. A wealth of information inside, from building a hurricane supply kit to safety precautions and evacuation routes. They are available for free at all Greer stores.
And if you really want a lifeline for the latest updates, download our FOX 10 Storm Tracker app.
“You know we can always check the latest forecast. You can see updates on tropical activity… We have video forecast discussions,” explained FOX 10 Chief Meteorologist Jason Smith. “This is an interactive map, so you can zoom in and scroll and see that this is the disturbance right here and these are some of the main computer models that show how it rises near the Yucatan Peninsula or towards Cuba.
And it’s easy to download, not to mention free!
“Yeah, this morning, I was looking at it and trying to follow the wave that’s out there. Looking at the hurricane that is out there and the QR code appeared there. In fact, I just set my phone up there with the QR scanner and when it came up, it was right in the window. So I uploaded it, quite useful,” said one man.
While it’s still too early to tell, staying connected is key.
“So I would say: never let your guard down. The weather is always under control. We have very little, all we can do is be careful and be prepared. I don’t think we should be afraid, but I think we should be prepared,” Wilmoth said.
