David Cronenberg’s mind-boggling classic scanners it is currently being reimagined as a series for HBO Max. After being in development for over five years, the series is expected to hit the floors soon.

The original sci-fi horror film is set in a world filled with psychic scanners with unusual telepathic and telekinetic powers. ConSec, a supplier of weapons and security systems, is looking for scanners to use for their own purposes.

The film’s plot revolves around Darryl Revok’s (Ironside) renegade Scanner attempt to wage war against ConSec. ConSec sends another scanner, Cameron Vale (Lack), to stop Revok.

Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, scanners it eventually gained cult status, propelling its writer-director Cronenberg into international prominence, earning him the title of master of body horror. According to the official synopsis of the developing series, it seems that the scanners will also be the antagonists this time.

They are described as “relentless agents with unimaginable powers” who hunt down “two women living on the fringes of modern society” on whom the series focuses. The women “must learn to work together to overthrow a great conspiracy determined to subdue them.”

The scanners became a universe with two sequels and two spin-offs added to the list. Emmy winner William Bridges (Black Mirror, Stranger Things) will serve as writer and executive producer for the series, while Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country, White Boy Rick) will direct.
