Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo had a goal and an assist in their 3-0 home win over bottom club Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday to move up to seventh in the standings.

Defender Ben Mee opened the scoring for Brentford with a header into the top left corner on 41 minutes, converting a beautiful lofted pass from Mbeumo.

The Cameroonian international doubled the lead three minutes later when Yoane Wissa set him up with a brilliant cross into the box, which Mbeumo finished off with a low shot from the first half.

Midfielder Mathias Jensen sealed the victory for the hosts in the 80th minute with a header inside the right post that denied Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

Brentford, who have won four of their last five league games, moved to 33 points from 21 matches and are three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League spot.

Southampton remain bottom of the table with 15 points. They will host 15th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday when Brentford travel to leaders Arsenal.

Brentford started the game fast and nearly scored after eight minutes when Wissa’s shot hit the post. The pace of the match then slowed down as both teams played poorly in midfield. Then the hosts came alive at the end of the half with two quick goals. Mbeumo assisted Mee on the opener in the 41st minute before scoring three minutes later to double the lead. Southampton failed to register a shot on goal in the first half. The second half was almost identical to the first. Southampton looked lethargic as their fans urged Jones to leave his post. Jensen scored a third for Brentford in the 80th minute when he sealed the win with a header into the bottom corner.
