While his namesake character’s movie has yet to hit theaters, Blue beetle Protagonist Xolo Maridueña has expressed interest in joining the DC Universe’s version of the Justice League.
Maridueña shared this wish while speaking to Empire, saying, “If we get a movie or a trilogy and dub this into Justice League shit, we’re all set for the whole nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the crew, we kick some ass with this movie. It just depends on the numbers.” The future of both properties in the DCU is currently up in the air, though a rumor from earlier this year claimed that Blue Beetle would remain a part of the franchise. That said, DC Studios co-chairs and co-heads Executives James Gunn and Peter Safran have not confirmed anything regarding Blue Beetle, so this news should be taken lightly.
Ángel Manuel Soto spoke about working on it in 2021 and commented: “It is an honor to direct Blue beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring in Jaime Reyes. [Blue Beetle’s alter ego] to the life. I can’t wait to make history together.” More recently, Soto and Maridueña spoke about what sets Jaime apart from other superheroes, stating that Jaime’s family knows about his powers and the struggles he faces with them, and Maridueña went on to call Jaime .the only superhero who didn’t want his abilities.

The synopsis in question says that Jaime, a college graduate, has “[returned] home full of aspirations for his future”, only to find it “not exactly as he left it”. Another surprise awaits him when Jaime takes possession of the Scarab and is chosen to be its “symbiotic host”. He is “bestowed with incredible armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny when he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.”
As for the Justice League and its future film outings, another rumor claimed that Gunn is working on a reboot that takes inspiration from DC: The New Frontier. Just as Blue Beetle is still a part of the DC Universe, Gunn hasn’t confirmed being involved in such a project.
