LITCHFIELD – Litchfield is set to play spoiler again in the Section 5AA baseball pool.
Last season as the eighth seed, the Dragons defeated first seed Southwest Christian in the second round.
The No. 8 seed once again, Litchfield has another shot at the No. 1 seed.
The Dragons enter the double-elimination portion of the bracket after defeating No. 9 Maple Lake 4-2 on Thursday at Optimist Park. “Playoff baseball is usually low-scoring and close,” Litchfield head coach Jeff Wollin said. “Sometimes you need a break and I think we played well enough today and we made our own breaks.”

At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Dragons (9-12) head to the top-seeded Rockford. The Rockets won both regular-season meetings: 6-3 on April 13; and 8-6 on May 1.
Rockford has won the last five games in the rivalry. Litchfield’s last win came in the 5AA playoffs on May 29, 2021.
“I think we need to change some things,” Wollin said.
On Thursday against Maple Lake, Anthony Estrada’s bat was the difference-maker for the Dragons.

A strong wind blowing from center field knocked over balls all day, except for a blast from Estrada in the first inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Estrada drove the ball over the left-field fence for a three-run home run.
“I fouled in the last one and I was a little nervous, so I was just thinking about the base hit,” said Estrada, a second-year third baseman. “I was looking for a good path for the bat and I got a nice hanging curve and got a good hit.”
After the Irish cut the deficit to one, Estrada delivered again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that brought Connor Taber home.
From there, pitcher Bradley Larson and the Litchfield defense had to finish the job.

Larson held Maple Lake (9-11) to four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
“He didn’t get into trouble with the debauchery and he got himself out of some jams,” Wollin said of Larson. “He competed very well for seven innings.”
The fifth inning was shaky as Maple Lake scored a pair of runs on Jarrett Faue’s double before Larson talked the Irish into making two straight pop outs. In the sixth, Maple Lake got runners at second and third base before Larson ended the threat by striking out Gavin Miller.
“Bradley has been a great pitcher and a great teammate for us all year,” Estrada said. “I’m glad he was able to come here and do the job for us.”
In the seventh, Estrada ended the game with a double play, touching third base for the forceout and throwing to first for the final out.
“That could have been good fortune with the way the ball was spinning,” Wollin said of the final out. “For Anthony to be able to get it and throw that jump pitch, it turned out to be a perfect jump shot, that was good.”
