Greensburg, Pa. – The Le Moyne College baseball team lost the last two games of their non-conference series at Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins claimed a 5-0 victory during the first game and then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh during the second game to earn a 5-4 victory.
Seton Hill senior left-handed pitcher Kevin Vaupel allowed just two hits, zero runs and two walks with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched to earn the complete-game shutout victory in game one.
Redshirt-Right-handed Sophomore Jordan Goldman (Encinitas, Calif/Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) started the first game on the mound for the ‘Phins and completed 5.2 innings of work before graduating right-handed John Geer (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) got the final out in the sixth inning.
second base graduate drew carrol (Clifton Park, NY/Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) provided Le Moyne’s two hits during the game’s upset.
Jack Whalen had two hits and a team-high two RBIs for Seton Hill during the first game.
Goldmann didn’t allow a run through the first four innings, then the Griffins scored two in the bottom of the fifth, then three more in the seventh.
Le Moyne put runners on second and third with two out in the top of the sixth, but Vaupel grounded out to end the inning and keep the shutout offer.
Vaupel posted a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to end the game.
During the second game, Seton Hill senior right-hander Jack Oberdorf hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Griffins a 1–0 lead.
The Griffins put runners on first and second with two out in the second inning, but starting pitcher Le Moyne kennen smith (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) struck out the next batter to end the inning.
rookie law eric swiencicki (Lancaster, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) entered the game for Smith with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, and the Griffins were able to score three more runs to extend their lead to 4-0.
Swiencicki walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the third, but retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Le Moyne senior relief pitcher jed boyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) held the Griffins scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings, then Le Moyne rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
first base graduate dewey roden (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off the seventh inning with a single to right field, then a freshman brody keneston (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) doubled to right field to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, NY/Geneva) drew a walk during the next at-bat to load the bases, then nick nevins (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch to push in Roden from third.
Seton Hill made a pitching change, then Lucas Egenhäuser (Suffern, NY/Suffern) drew a walk to drive in Keneston and cut Le Moyne’s deficit to 4-2.
First year student adam sullivan (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) ripped a two-RBI single up the middle during the next at-bat to tie the game 4-4.
Seton Hill got a groundout and a liner double play to end the inning and prevent further damage.
SHU catcher Vincenzo Rauso drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, then stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to end the game and hit SHU. the Griffins a 5-4 victory.
The Le Moyne College baseball team will return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to Saint Anselm College for a four-game non-conference weekend series against the Hawks.
