What is the story of “Avatar: The Way of Water”?
To kick things off, here’s the movie’s story synopsis from the official Avatar website, and then I’ll elaborate on this synopsis with more information that James Cameron and his producer, Jon Landau, have revealed over the years. about the movie:
“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the problems that haunt them, how far they go. to stay safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”
In addition to this synopsis, it is important to know that while Avatar explored the life and culture of the Omatikaya clan and their home, Kelutral/The Home Tree. “Way of Water,” as its name implies, is set to explore the oceans of Pandora, introducing a new reef-dwelling Na’vi tribe, the Metkayina.
Like the movie, while it does bring back Neytiri and Jake Sully, our heroes from “Avatar,” they’re not necessarily the main focus of this story. Because, as confirmed by Jon Landau in this December 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“Ultimately, the sequels are a story about family and the efforts parents must make to keep that family together and safe.”
“I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes, and really, there is no more universal theme than family.”
In addition to this, by the time of “Way of Water”, we will see that Jake and Neytiri have five children, three of which are their biological children and two that they adopted and raised as their own:

Thanks to Empire Magazine and the official Avatar website, the first image above shows Jake and Neytiri with their biological Na’vi children:
(L to R) Tuktirey (played by Trinity Bliss), Neteyam (played by Jamie Flatters), and Lo’ak (played by Britain Dalton)
In the next image, we see Jake and Neytiri’s adopted daughter, Kiri, who is another completely new character in the Avatar universe, but will be played by one of the most iconic cast members from the original film, Sigourney Weaver.
Then, in the final image, we see a close-up of Jake and Neytiri’s adopted human son, Spider/Miles Socorro (played by Jack Champion). Because, as this Empire Online article reveals, Spider was just a baby at the end of the first film, when the film’s antagonists, the human corporation, the RDA, were exiled from Pandora and forced back to Earth. But, because Spider was too young to make the trip back to Earth, they left him on Pandora, where Jake and Neytiri took him in and raised him as part of his family.
Which, speaking of the GDR, the first trailer for the film makes it clear that they have now returned to Pandora, despite agreeing never to return, because as we all know, for corporations like the GDR, greed always trumps money. honor.
However, unlike before, when the only human/Na’vi RDA hybrids were research scientists documenting Pandora and her interactions with the Na’vi, Jake is the only military-trained human to receive a human/Na’vi hybrid. . As he was meant to protect the scientists to whom he was assigned, but he also, at least initially, worked for a dueling purpose under Colonel Miles Quaritch, who ordered him to ingratiate himself with the Na’vi to learn the mysteries of it.
Whereas now, we see that Jake is no longer the only military-trained human/Na’vi hybrid, as none other than Quaritch himself has been resurrected, following his defeat at the hands of Jake in the climactic battle of the original film, and now he appears to lead his own human/Na’vi hybrid soldiers, as the RDA once again attempts to destroy Pandora by stripping it of its natural resources.
