Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director for Amy Winehouse’s film Amyis to create a new docuseries about Camden’s musical history.
The four-part series, titled Camdenis being created for Disney+, and its reveal comes as part of the announcement of a handful of new projects for the streaming service, including a documentary starring Keanu Reeves about a Formula 1 team, a show about the recent trial of ‘Wagatha Christie’. and another documenting the fashion of the ’90s.
A synopsis of the new show reads: “Camden is a four-part original documentary series created by Lightbox, the production company founded by Academy Award-winning producer Simon Chinn (“Man on Wire,” “Searching for Sugar Man”) and Emmy-winning producer Jonathan Chinn ( “LA 92,” “Tina”) and Asif Kapadia, Academy Award-winning director of Amy. Day One Pictures, the production company co-founded by Amy Winehouse’s original manager Nick Shymansky, with Jasper Waller-Bridge and Ben Friedman, also serve as executive producers.”
He adds: “How has music as we know it changed a little corner of North London? This thought-provoking series will reveal the remarkable untold stories of how Camden shaped the lives and careers of many of today’s most iconic musical acts, along with some of the careers that were broken by him. With access to some of the world’s biggest music stars whose lives were forever changed in this little part of London, this series will finally give Camden the recognition he deserves on a global stage.”

Speaking of the new series, Kapadia said: “I am born and raised in North London and Camden has been a key part of my life; I’ve had all kinds of experiences there: good, great… and cutting edge.
“This series celebrates an ever-evolving music scene in a unique place that has always been at the forefront of counterculture and has a musical legacy to match anywhere in the world. I am thrilled to be working with Lightbox and Day One and are very excited that Disney+ has given us a global platform to tell this special story.”
Another recent Kapadia documentary came in the form of 1971: The year music changed everythingwhich debuted on Apple TV+ last year.
speaking to NME About the film and the discovery of never-before-seen footage, the director said: “I’ve seen so many movies about David Bowie and I thought there was really nothing left to see, especially in 1971. He was practically invisible that year. But I found these negative sheets, three frame negative sheets. I think I had seen one, in an anthology book about his life. But there were three leaves here. And they were amazing. I couldn’t believe he had found them.”
